The National Organization for Women is Rising this V-Day in support of the Military Justice Improvement Act currently being considered in the US Senate. The prosecution of sexual assault cases in the US military is a joke, despite a “zero tolerance” policy. Survivors of assault are not taken seriously and fear reprisal if they press charges.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s bill, the Military Justice Improvement Act, S. 1752, takes prosecution of these crimes outside of the chain of command, and provides for an independent and specially trained prosecutor to handle sexual assault charges. As women around the world rise to stop violence against women, NOW rises with them and asks our elected officials to do the same by taking a stand against violence in the military and for our female soldiers and veterans.
