Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. once famously said that the ”most segregated hour of Christian America is on Sunday morning.” Nearly 50 years after his death, segregated Sunday mornings are still a pervasive issue in our Christian churches. During the month of January, we will be hosting a series of dialogues on Race and the Church. From Scripture to storytelling, each week will bring new discoveries for this complex relationship. Here is the schedule:

5pm- Supper by Sycamore House. Bring a side dish to share!
6pm- Root Groups Conversation. There are separate program opporunities for K-5 Children and 6-12th Youth. Childcare is avaialable upon advanced notice. Please contact ecorey@ststep.org to request.

January 10th & 17th- Life Together: Conversations on Race
This two week conversation focuses on the construction of race, engaging diversity and navigating communication. Facilitators: Amanda Arbour, YWCA Racial Justice Program Coordinator and Mr. Anthony Alexander of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

January 24th- The Bible and Slavery: Does the Bible Still Have a Moral Voice?
This presentation by Dr. Emerson Powery examines the peculiar role of Scripture in Antebellum Slavery. Dr. Powery is a professor of Biblical Studies at Messiah College and the co-editor of True To Our Native Land: An African American New Testament Commentary.

January 31st— The Episcopal Church and Race: A Local, Historical Snapshot
This dialogue explores the Episcopal Church of Pennsylvania’s historical relationship with race. Facilitated by Kevin Barron, Co-Chair of the Episcopal Diocese of Central PA’s Anti-Racism Commission.
