Doris Pridgen (nee Spivey) March 15, 2022, Age 93
Doris was born on July 5, 1928, in the Elmwood section of Philadelphia. She was the eldest of 10 daughters born to Sarah Louise and Joseph T. Spivey. Doris was educated in the School District of Philadelphia. Doris also attended Temple University where she became a sister of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Doris met Charles Aaron Pridgen, a Naval veteran and local artist, on a blind date. They married in 1952. The vibrant life they lead was reflected in the unique paintings he created. Their union was blessed with 3 children.
Doris was an avid reader, consuming literature as diverse as Greek philosophy, socio-economic development, current events, and (of course) African American history. Doris was also a great fan of the jazz greats. She and Charles amassed a collection of jazz recordings that was greatly admired. Important to Doris was contributing to the improvement of our society in general. She spent almost 30 years in the school district of Philadelphia.
She was also actively involved in the political culture and was an active participant and leader in the National Organization for Women for many years. Doris loved her family. As the matriarch, she was happiest when surrounded by the laughter and joy of her extended family, which included many special friends adopted into the family over the years. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
