There are three open seats on the state Supreme Court, for the first time in 300 years. And your vote tomorrow, Tuesday November 3rd is crucial to determining the fate of important issues in the state for years to come: Education Funding, Voter ID Laws, Worker’s and Women’s Rights, to name a few.

Even more importantly, every decade new legislative maps are drawn based on the US Census. The state Supreme Court drives the redistricting process in Pennsylvania, and, like it or not, the process is political. This can lead to gerrymandering. Gerrymandering cuts districts up in such a way as to provide an unfair advantage to one party’s candidates and that’s just what happened in 2010. Pennsylvanians have been paying the price for it ever since.

Most Pennsylvanians believe we should tax frackers and fund education, for instance, but our majority-Republican General Assembly opposes these things, and has refused to negotiate with Governor Wolf for months and months now, costing taxpayers millions of dollars. Many of these members are in outrageously gerrymandered districts, and don’t feel they have to compromise or represent their constituents because they are protected against challengers. This election, we have the chance to elect judges that will bring dignity and fairness to the state Supreme Court, as well as to elect many other great candidates across the state in municipal races. It could not be more important to go vote for them Tuesday!
