Two Transgender Rights Bills Firsts for PA

Pennsylvania NOW is proud to support to first of its kind transgender rights bills in the state, introduced by Philadelphia Representative Mark Cohen. The right to determine one’s gender identity and to be able to transition medically is often unavailable to those marginalized due to gender identity and poverty. NOW supports healthcare autonomy, the idea that people should be able to make their own healthcare decisions.

The Transgender Pupil Education Rights Act, HB 303, is similar to a California law that allows transgender students to dress, enter facilities, and participate in activities based on a student’s gender identity, regardless of the sex listed on the student’s records.

The Transgender Health Benefits Act, HB 304, would require that Medicaid, public, and private healthcare plans cover transition related procedures, including hormones, therapy, and surgery.
